OMEGA and Apollo 13: A Successful Failure

The OMEGA Speedmaster is no ordinary timepiece. This iconic watch has a rich history of serving pilots, astronauts, and explorers with its durability, precision, and readability. And it all began in 1957 as a racing chronograph. Fast forward to the 1960s, and the Speedmaster became the official watch of NASA’s manned spaceflight program.

Why?

Because Timing is everything in space exploration. Astronauts must rely on precise timekeeping to make split-second decisions, coordinate their movements, and ensure their safety. Any mistake could mean the difference between life and death!

And that’s exactly why the OMEGA Speedmaster proved to be a hero!

Read on to find out how…

The Importance of Timing in Space Missions

In the vacuum of space, there are no traditional landmarks or reference points to guide astronauts. As a result, timing is critical to ensure the success and safety of space missions. Astronauts must rely on precise timekeeping to coordinate their movements and activities, make split-second decisions, and ensure their survival. Any deviation from schedule or error in timing could have catastrophic consequences.

The Apollo 13 Disaster: A Critical Moment for the OMEGA Speedmaster

On April 11th, 1970, the Apollo 13 mission was launched with the goal of landing on the moon. However, two days later, an explosion in one of the oxygen tanks caused a catastrophic failure that threatened the lives of the three astronauts on board. The mission was aborted, and the crew was forced to rely on the lunar module as a ‘lifeboat’ to survive until they could return safely to Earth.

As part of the rescue efforts, the crew needed to make a critical course correction by manually burning fuel for precisely 14 seconds. Without functioning digital timers, astronaut Jack Swigert used his OMEGA Speedmaster to time the burn, while James Lovell used the Earth’s horizon as a guide to steer the craft. The maneuver worked perfectly, and the crew was able to return home safely. The OMEGA Speedmaster had played a vital role in the success of the mission, earning it a place in history as the ‘moonwatch that saved Apollo 13.’

The Silver Snoopy Award: A Mark of Gratitude and Innovation

In recognition of OMEGA’s contributions to the success of human spaceflight missions, NASA awarded the company its prestigious Silver Snoopy Award on October 5th, 1970. The award, which features a sterling silver lapel pin depicting Snoopy, NASA’s unofficial mascot, was created to recognize individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the success of NASA’s human spaceflight program.
